Convert QuarkXpress Files to Apple Pages

Job ID: 40397162

Budget: $8 – $15 USD

As Apple Pages is a must, this project is suited to someone with a Mac. As for the applications, I can supply these if you are missing them. QuarkXpress version is 2024, but can be converted to other versions. I am using Apple Pages 12.2.1 on macOS Monterey. The newer versions of the latter app (yes, I do have the latest too, but will not be moving to it, as I don't want to update macOS as yet) should be readable on my old Apple Pages if you follow the Apple Pages file I will supply as a template, You will see it is using quite basic app features:

1. Built in style sheet ready-to-go.
2. To import and embed images, use Media > Choose

That's the extent of the features I use. However, the hard part in all this are as follows:

1. QuarkXpress is hopeless at exporting footnotes.
2. Need to import images into Apple Pages for proper embedding.
3. Apply styles to the text in the Apple Pages file to look the same as QuarkXpress file.

Styles I mainly use are: Heading 1, Heading 2, Default, Default No Indent, Quote, Footnote. There may be some bullet and numbered lists.

Process:

1. Click into QuarkXpress text.
2. Either select all, copy, and paste directly into the Apple Pages file supplied using "Paste and Match Style" to keep the work to a minimum, or export as RTF, open RTF and copy and "Paste and Match Style" into the Apple Pages file.
3. Copy and paste each footnote into Apple Pages. Find where the footnotes are positioned in the original and insert footnote in the same place in Apple Pages file, press Tab, and "Paste and Match Style" the footnote text. Or use the "footnote" style.
4. I will include two sample text boxes with an image and caption in the Apple Pages file—one full page and another as a partial page. Copy and paste, delete old image, and import the new image with the new caption. Try to copy and paste the text boxes with their respective images in roughly the same spot as in the QuarkXpress file.

Reason: Although QuarkXpress is a capable app, it is riddled with bugs that cause unexpected crashes, and one of the bugs is really bad in relation to wraparound text outside of a full page image. Older versions and newer versions of QuarkXpress has never fixed the problem. Apple Pages, whilst cheap and cheerful, is much more reliable, and has all the essential features I need to publish a book. I will be doing away with QuarkXpress (and yes, I have used Adobe InDesign, but also found a major bug with hi-res and large TIFF images that prevents me from re-opening the file). I have not seen Apple Pages collapse on me, not once, under heavy loads, big images and all the rest. And anyway, Apple Pages is free.

NOTE: Multiple freelancers may be hired in this project to handle a number of Appendices and selected chapters, while I work on the critical chapters at my end.

Skills Required:
1. Nothing too technical or complex. Mostly copy and paste, applying styles, and importing images.
2. I will be supplying the images in 300dpi, the Apple Pages file sample with stylesheet already set up, and the QuarkXpress file.

If you are interested in working on this project, let me know. Hiring will commence sooner than you think, so don't delay.

Thanks.
