College Performance Analysis Report
Budget: $80 – $100 USD
Scenario:
You have been asked to join a Professional Learning Community (PLC) in your district that consists of mathematics teachers at all grade levels. Your PLC has been given a School District Data Set that shows how students across the school district performed on all tested content areas of the STAAR test. The data set also contains test scores from surrounding districts that have campuses that geographically border your district. Your PLC is only focused on the mathematics scores provided on the data set. Your responsibility within the PLC is to disaggregate* the School District Data Set to identify trends and patterns found in mathematics scores to inform decision-making in your district about mathematics instruction. You will be tasked with creating a visual presentation of your analysis to the PLC with accompanying charts and/or graphs to represent and explain your findings.
*Disaggregated data refers to the separation of compiled information into smaller units to elucidate underlying trends and patterns.
Part 1: Data Analysis Report:
Complete the following for your report:
Review the School District Data Set to disaggregate* the data into 4 separate sheets on 1 Excel spreadsheet (Refer to the work you did for Module 1 Optional Activity)
Create an Excel Spreadsheet with a minimum of 4 Sheets that builds on the ORGL 3331 Plano Raw Data_Excel (Note: Additional tabs/sheets can be added, but ONLY if germane to your project presentation.)
Excel Spreadsheet – Plano Raw: Data provided for you that was converted from the optional Module 1 PDF data set and presented in Module 2 Optional Activity instructions.
Excel Spreadsheet- Plano Math_Enr=400+: Create a sheet with Plano mathematics scores at the district level for all tested grades. (Refer to the work you did for Module 2 Optional Activity)
Excel Spreadsheet - Mean.Med.Mode: Create a sheet listing the mean, median, and mode for the elementary, middle, and high school campuses included in sheet 2 (campuses with enrollment of 400+). (Refer to the work you did for the Module 3 Optional Activity)
Excel Spreadsheet – Patterns: Create a spreadsheet that includes the visuals of additional analysis and graphics (i.e., pivot tables, pivot charts, combo charts) that you plan to copy and paste into your PowerPoint presentation. (Refer to the work you did for the Module 5 Optional Activity)
You will use your spreadsheet to do your presentation in Part 2. (Note: Be sure to clean your Excel file of untitled tabs/worksheets and any analysis you did not pursue in your presentation before you submit; also be sure that all data, charts, axes, tables are clearly labeled.)

Complete the Following for your Data Analysis Report:
Open the ORGL 3331 Plano Raw District_Excel and download it on your computer. The sheet provides all Plano ISD STAAR data from the PDF presented in Module 1 Optional Activity in an Excel file. The mathematics scores will be the focus of your final project, and you will continue to build tabs and worksheets throughout your optional activities.
(Note: If interested in the process for converting files from PDF to Excel, download Adobe Acrobat Pro, available for free with your TAMUC credentials; Click on the tab entitled “Convert;” select Excel; clean data (i.e. delete narrative and text, random textboxes; create and check labels; get your data into usable shape). Excel Spreadsheet – Plano Math_Enr=400+: Copy and paste the raw Plano ISD data from the spreadsheet onto a new tab/worksheet and label the new worksheet Plano Math_Enr=400+. DO NOTE DELETE THE RAW DATA tab/worksheet. Delete any rows of data with school/campus enrollment less than 400, and maintain all the rest of the campuses with 400 or more students. Delete all the columns of reading, science, and social science scores and state and district scores from your data set. This will be the data you will use for the remainder of your report. Note: Remember that you will have state and district means in your raw data, as well as other subject data, if you decide to do any future charts to compare math achievement with other subjects, districts, or state.
Consider what questions you have about the data as you begin to build your Excel spreadsheet.
Submit a current copy of your Excel spreadsheet with your newly added worksheet tab Plano Math_Enr=400+ and any questions you have at this point for your instructor.

Excel Spreadsheet -Mean.Med.Mode: Create an Excel worksheet/tab listing the STAAR mathematics mean, median, and mode for the elementary, middle, and high school and senior high campuses from the entire Plano district (Note: Use data from Plano Math_Enr=400+ tab, campuses with an enrollment of 400+). You will title this tab Mean.Med.Mode
Consider the shifts in district-wide mean, median, and mode from one grade level (or testing point) to the next. What jumps out at you in this grade-level district data? Consider adding a pivot table and chart at illustrating shift in means at each grade level to provide a visual graphic of the data trends from one grade-level year to the next across the district.
After reviewing the mean, median, and mode, is there a particular grade level of interest or relevance to you? How does information at that grade level compare to means at the State level, other districts at the same grade level, or other grades at the campus Be sure to use the DDDM Teacher Resource Booklet as a support.
Submit your newly revised Excel file that adds the Mean.Med.Mod worksheet/tab, analysis and any graphics you created at the grade level. Include questions you have for your instructor and questions in the data you plan to explore for “deeper dives” at the campus level or grade level that will be relevant to you and your final culminating report and presentation.
Review your disaggregated data (Spreadsheet) to determine patterns and trends you want to explore and present to your PLC members; these should be relevant to the grade level or campus configuration with a grade level you hope to teach in the future. At this point, you do not need to do analysis per grade level with school configurations that are not of importance to your PLC or data story.
Consider what patterns and trends are seen at the campus level that may or may not be seen at the district level. Consider a deep focus on some of the following: grade level scores and trends at a school level configuration relative to state averages or other comparison school averages; grade-shift in scores and potential relationships with economic disadvantage or drastically shifting enrollment; specific campus scores relative to other campuses with similar demographics and KPI’s (i.e., enrollment, enrollment shift, economic disadvantage.) Note: At this point in analysis, you move from the big district level picture to a focus on schools or grades that are important to you.
Create a series of graphics or pivot charts and tables for your deep dive at a grade or campus level. You can place these on a separate tab entitled Patterns. Be sure you label all variables, series, axes, etc. You will copy and paste these into your PowerPoint presentation. Note: If you are unsure about the patterns and trends, reach out to your instructor with your ideas of what you think are patterns and trends to get feedback.
