Shopify Customization for Enforcing Mandatory Product Bundles
Budget: £20 – £250 GBP
Project Overview:
We are building a new Shopify store that sells four hardware products, each of which must be purchased with a subscription. We sell to both B2C (retail) and B2B (business) customers, and therefore have a subdomain to handle the business storefront. Each product page will display the hardware price separately from the subscription price, and we want to ensure customers cannot purchase the hardware without selecting a subscription.
We are looking for freelancers to quote for either Solution One (Single SKU approach) or Solution Two (Two SKU approach). The selected freelancer will collaborate with our current designer/developer, who will provide the necessary visual designs.
The Problem:
Shopify does not natively support the requirement to enforce the bundling of two separate products, where both are mandatory for purchase. In our case, this involves hardware and a required subscription.
To achieve this, we want to present a "Subscription Not Yet Selected" button alongside three subscription options. As the customer selects a subscription, the total price needs to dynamically update on the product page.
We face the following challenges:
1. Displaying the prices of the two products separately on the product page and ensuring that when the subscription is selected, the total price dynamically updates based on the subscription length.
2. Ensuring the customer cannot add only the hardware to the cart without first selecting a subscription. This includes disabling the "Add to Cart" button and displaying a prompt, such as red text next to the button, stating something like "Please select a subscription option" until a valid selection is made.
3. Preventing customers from removing the subscription once they arrive at the cart, ensuring that both products remain bundled throughout the checkout process.
We have two potential solutions to address this problem:

Solution One: Single SKU Approach (Simpler)
In this approach, we create a single SKU in Shopify that represents the bundle of both the hardware and the subscription.
• How It Works:
o The product page will display the prices of both products separately using JavaScript as a visual element. When the customer selects the subscription, the total price will dynamically update on the page.
o The "Add to Cart" button will be disabled until the subscription is selected, with a visual prompt (e.g., red text) displayed next to the button stating "Please select a subscription option."
o In the Cart: Since the two products are represented by a single SKU, Shopify will treat it as one product, preventing customers from removing the subscription.
• Drawback: This solution requires manual front-end updates for future price changes, as the dynamic pricing is not directly linked to the Shopify database.

Solution Two: Two SKU Approach (Preferred Solution)
Our preferred solution is to treat the hardware and subscription as two separate SKUs. This approach offers greater flexibility for inventory management and future pricing updates.
• How It Works:
o The product page will display separate prices for both products, but the prices will be pulled from the Shopify database. This ensures pricing accuracy and makes future updates easier.
o The "Add to Cart" button will be disabled until both products (hardware and subscription) are selected, with a visual prompt (e.g., red text) displayed next to the button stating "Please select a subscription option."
o In the Cart: Custom logic will ensure that if the customer attempts to remove one SKU (e.g., the subscription), the hardware will also be removed, enforcing the mandatory bundling of both products.
• Benefits: This solution is future-proof, allowing for easier price updates directly in the Shopify admin without requiring changes to front-end code.

Deliverables:
• Solution One:
o Dynamic pricing on product pages using a single SKU.
o Implementation of the "Subscription Not Yet Selected" button with dynamic price updates.
o Disabled "Add to Cart" button until a subscription is selected.
o Display a visual prompt (e.g., red text) next to the "Add to Cart" button prompting users to select a subscription.
• Solution Two (Preferred):
o Dynamic pricing on product pages using two SKUs.
o Custom cart logic to enforce the bundling of hardware and subscription when using separate SKUs.
o Integration of pricing updates directly from the Shopify database.
o Display a visual prompt (e.g., red text) next to the "Add to Cart" button prompting users to select a subscription.

Multi-Store Setup:
• Retail Store (B2C): Prices must be displayed inclusive of VAT for retail customers.
• Business Store (B2B): Prices should be displayed exclusive of VAT, although VAT will still be calculated and applied at checkout.
Urgency:
We need to complete the selected solution within a few days. Please apply only if you are confident in delivering within this timeframe and specify whether you are quoting for Solution One or Solution Two.
