Fantasy Short Story: "Dawn Rider's Promise" -- 2
Budget: €6 – €12 EUR
The sun had not yet risen when Elara swung herself onto the back of her chestnut mare, Solara. The valley below was wrapped in silver fog, and the only sound was the soft rhythm of hooves on damp earth.
For years, Elara had been known as the best rider in the northern highlands — swift, fearless, and always alone. She rode in races, through mountain passes, across rivers where few dared to go. But this morning, her ride had nothing to do with victory or fame. It was about keeping a promise.
Three years earlier, her brother had left for war and tied a ribbon to Solara’s bridle. “When I come home,” he said, “I’ll ride beside you again.”
He never came back.
Every morning since, Elara had ridden through the mist before dawn, following the same path they once took together — across the hills, down by the old oak, and up to the ridge where the first sunlight touched the world. It was her way of remembering him, of keeping that promise alive.
But this morning felt different. The wind was warmer, the air lighter. When she reached the ridge, the fog lifted in one graceful motion — and there, in the golden light, she saw another rider approaching from the distance.
