Unix Shell Assistance?

I'm working on a unix shell assignment for class, and I basically have all the main functions done, such as normal piping and IO redirection. However, I am stuck on one part of the assignment (in the png below) with a different form of piping, "$", which I really need to get done.

I will send over my code if you choose to to take up this request so you can see how I formatted everything, and do it in accordance to that.
