Dave Finnigan (born Oliver Davis Finnigan 3rd in 1941) is an American educator and social entrepreneur, considered to be one of the most significant figures in the worldwide popularization of recreational juggling. He is the founder of Juggling for Success, an educational program, which, as Professor Confidence, he delivered from 1976 through 2006 in over 2,000 elementary schools in 46 states and in schools in Europe, Latin America, and Asia. He also presented workshops and keynotes at over 200 state, regional and national physical education and recreation conventions in the US and Canada. Dave is the author of The Complete Juggler, the Joy of Juggling, and The Zen of Juggling, which have been translated into numerous languages. With his children, Dorothy and Benjamin, he wrote Juggling from Start to Star. Dave has produced 38 instructional songs and four hours of instructional videos on juggling, winning a Parents’ Choice Award among other honors. In the late 1970s Finnigan designed, developed and marketed the first commercially successful line of juggling props under the Jugglebug® brand, which he sold to Sportime in 1994. In 2007 he was trained by Al Gore and became a presenter with The Climate Reality Project. Finnigan focused on climate change education for elementary students with his program, Climate Change is Elementary.

Early Years

Finnigan lived during World War II with his grandfather, three-term Pennsylvania US Congressman, William R. Coyle (R). He then traveled with his parents, Jane Finnigan and Captain O. D. Finnigan, Jr, living on US Naval bases all over the World. After graduating in June 1963 from Cornell University with a BA in Sociology and Anthropology, Dave served as a US Army Officer, graduated from Airborne and Ranger schools and rose to the rank of Captain. He took an overseas discharge in South Korea and worked from 1966 through 1976 as a consultant to the Family Planning Directors of the Ministries of Health in Korea, Taiwan, and the Philippines, with additional assignments in Indonesia, Thailand, Nepal and Turkey. Dave’s work was in Information, Education and Communication, particularly on the use of door-to-door field workers and positive incentives to reward families for accepting family planning and achieving small family size. Dave took one year off to earn a Masters in Public Health Education (MPH) from the University of California Berkeley. In 1976 he advanced to candidacy for a Special Individual PhD in Population and Development Planning at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Marriage and Children

Dave is married to Thelma Finnigan (nee Cafino) from Cabangahan, Siaton, Negros Oriental, Philippines. They have three children - Davy (b. 1968), Dorothy (b. 1984) and Benjamin (b. 1988).

Because his son, Davy has severe cerebral palsy, Dave could not return to the less-developed World to work in family planning, so he focused on his hobby, and began bringing recreational juggling into popular culture with his books and videos and by teaching physical education teachers to teach the skill, starting with slow-moving nylon scarves.

Honors and Awards

Dave’s work was recognized in 1991 when he was awarded the first Excellence in Education Award by the International Jugglers Association. Dave also has been presented with highest earned award from the National Speakers Association (NSA) the designation Certified Speaking Professional (CSP).

Current Work

During the Covid pause, with the help of over 60 interns studying Sustainability at University of Central Florida, Dave created the Green Actioneers Family Action Guide, a 246-page bilingual manual with 100 steps a family can take to become sustainable. It is designed to be distributed at Green Actioneers family night in elementary and middle schools starting in the US and elsewhere starting in the 2023-24 school year. Dave also is the liaison for Transit X in Florida.
