Your Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit,
The international community recognizes your historic role in South Sudan’s independence and the sacrifices made in pursuit of sovereignty. That contribution is acknowledged and will remain part of the nation’s history.
However, South Sudan now stands at a critical crossroads. Continued political stagnation, insecurity, humanitarian suffering, and delays in democratic transition risk undermining the country’s future and regional stability. These challenges cannot be resolved through force or indefinite extensions of the status quo.
We believe that a voluntary, orderly, and dignified transfer of executive authority—as part of a clearly defined, civilian-led transitional framework—would represent the most credible pathway to national reconciliation, institutional renewal, and long-term peace.
Such a step would:
Enable an inclusive political transition free from fear and coercion
Restore public trust in state institutions
Create conditions for credible elections
Unlock sustained international support for recovery, development, and security-sector reform
The international community stands ready to support:
Personal security guarantees and dignified status following transition
A national reconciliation process led by South Sudanese civilians
Economic stabilization, humanitarian relief, and development assistance tied to measurable transition benchmarks
History judges leaders not only by how they came to power, but by how they chose to leave it. A peaceful step aside at this moment would be viewed globally as an act of statesmanship—one that places the survival and unity of the nation above all else.
