Smart Motion Detection Security Camera
Budget: $10 – $30 USD
The goal is to build a smart security camera that reliably spots any movement in its field of view and responds in real-time. General motion detection—not facial recognition or object-specific tracking—is the core of the project, so the software stack and hardware selection need to prioritise accurate, low-latency change-of-scene analysis.
Night-time performance is essential. Infra-red night vision must be integrated so the camera can maintain the same detection accuracy in low-light or no-light conditions. If you can keep the IR LEDs power-efficient while still providing a clear 10-15 m range, that would be ideal.
Video should stream in at least 1080p and store locally (micro-SD or on-board eMMC). I am open to cloud storage or two-way audio later, but those features are secondary right now; the system architecture should leave room for them so I can add them with minimal re-engineering.
Deliverables
• Hardware bill of materials with supplier links and price estimates
• Firmware / software that handles motion detection and IR switching
• Setup guide from unboxing to first live stream
• Short demo video showing daytime and night-time detection events
Acceptance criteria
1. Motion events are logged with timestamps and saved clips.
2. False positives stay below 5 % during a 24-hour indoor test.
3. Night-vision footage is clearly readable at 10 m.
4. Full setup takes no more than 20 minutes following your guide.
