ZFS Fragmentation @ 90% Resulting In 100% Full rpool

Job ID: 36722124

Budget: $50 – $0 USD

We need a ZFS expert to assist with an issue. We had recently run out of space due to excessive /root/.zfs/snapshots

I was notified and deleted a few hundred GB of old snapshots and also put a snapshot monitoring system in place.

However, we found upon our first reboot that running zpool list reveals our rpool is now 90% fragmented. This appears to be a direct result of the snapshot deletions.

zpool get capacity,size,health,fragmentation
NAME PROPERTY VALUE SOURCE
rpool capacity 96% -
rpool size 440G -
rpool health ONLINE -
rpool fragmentation 90% -

So although we have a 440GB pool, only 40G is available to use and we are against the wall.

Research has not found a clear method to defragment our pool and get the server up and running again.

We need someone who has seen this movie before and knows how it ends.

Looking for help immediately.

Thanks.
