Comprehensive IoT Home Automation System
Budget: €8 – €30 EUR
I am looking for an expert in Internet of Things (IoT) who can create a comprehensive Home Automation System. The main functionalities required are:
Innovative Telecommunication Systems
The project requires the design and the development of a system related to the Internet of Things paradigm
to be carried out by integrating the skills acquired during the course. Students must choose an application
scenario that represents the target of the project; the subject must be proposed for approval to the teachers,
by e-mail or during the lectures.
The minimum requirements for the realization of the project are the following:
• Definition of heterogeneous hardware entities (to be simulated) (e.g. analogical sensors, digital devices).
• Implementation of a graphical interface to support the simulated hardware.
• Use of TCP and MQTT protocols (or other ones, to be agreed with the teacher). Concerning MQTT, define
an appropriate topics hierarchy.
• Use of a database, not only as a final data repository but queries for data extraction and
analysis/visualization must be performed within the defined system.
• Definition of an adequate number of rules, to be implemented within Node-Red. Multiple rules can be
combined within the same flow. Some of these rules must transmit encrypted data and, therefore, include
encryption and decryption operations.
• Creation of dashboards that allow viewing the behavior of the monitored data.
Project structure:
The project must include:
• A pdf report (in English) containing a detailed description regarding the structure of the presented
solution, the protocols, the flows, and the functions used throughout the project. The report must show
how the project is structured and how communications take place within the entire system. Every
functionality must be properly motivated.
• UML models or other kinds of formal or informal representation should be used to provide a clear
overview of the system and of its behavior.
• The developed code, which includes both Java (or another language) code, the flows exported from Node-
Red, and the dump of the database.
Notes:
• The programming language, the adopted database, and query language can be chosen by the
student.
• Students must indicate how to run the project: it must be executable on the VM provided during the
lab, or in other development environments, without having to manually configure each tool.
