Mac Word File Organization

I'm seeking assistance to organize and improve retrieval of Word files on my Mac, using local storage.
Key tasks include:
- Organizing files into a logical structure
- Improving file retrieval processes

- Familiarity with Word file management
When I save Word files, after a couple of months, when I try to open one, I get an error message saying the file can't be opened. So, this is my main issue right now. I used to have a much simpler system for organizing Word files on my old iMac, but with a newer iMac and revisions to Microsoft Word for Mac, I'm a bit lost. I need to get a systematized way of storing files on my computer that makes it easy to open any of my Word files. I'd also like some help in setting up iCloud, and how to use it.
