Circle.so-Style Community Platform

I want to launch a self-hosted community that feels as smooth and intuitive as Circle.so but is focused on one thing only: lively discussion forums for my social-interest group. The end product should let me spin up both public and private spaces, moderate them easily, and keep the conversation flowing with real-time updates, rich-text posts, replies, reactions, and notifications.
