Comprehensive Market & Competitor Research for CBSE Publishing Startup
Budget: ₹12,500 – ₹37,500 INR
We are a 4-year-old CBSE-focused educational publishing startup. We have launched a few products (Class 11 & 12 subjects) based on our own expertise, but the adoption and feedback from schools/teachers have not been very strong.
We now want to commission deep structured market research to understand the publishing ecosystem and improve our strategy.
Objectives of the Research
The research should help us answer:
1. Market Landscape – What is the size of the CBSE school books market (by subject, class, and region)? Which regions or subjects are growth opportunities?
2. Customer Insights – How do principals/teachers decide which books to adopt? What are the major pain points with current CBSE textbooks? What is their perception of our brand and products?
3. Competitor Benchmarking – Compare at least 5 major competitors (content quality, pedagogy, printing, pricing, distribution, marketing, add-ons like teacher guides/digital tools).
4. Distribution & Sales Channels – How do distributors choose publishers? What margins, incentives, and credit cycles do they expect? Which regions are underserved and open for us?
5. Pricing & Packaging Sensitivity – How do teachers/distributors perceive pricing/value? What bundling or digital add-ons increase adoption?
6. Future Outlook – What new opportunities are emerging from CBSE/NEP 2020 reforms (e.g., skill-based subjects, AI, coding, applied math)? Where can we be a first mover?
Deliverables Required
• Detailed Research Report (PDF) covering all findings.
• Competitor Benchmark Matrix (side-by-side comparison).
• Customer Insights Report (charts, verbatim teacher/distributor feedback).
• Actionable Recommendations for product improvement, pricing, packaging, and distribution.
• Opportunity Map of subjects, regions, and formats we should target.
• Raw data (Excel/CSV of surveys, interview notes).
Methodology (to be proposed by you)
We expect the researcher/freelancer to design the flow and suggest methodology. Likely a mix of:
• Desk research (syllabus analysis, CBSE circulars, competitor catalogues, pricing).
• Primary research (structured interviews/surveys with teachers, principals, distributors).
• Focus groups (teacher discussions for pain points).
• Mystery shopping/competitor audit (collecting competitor books & distributor schemes).
