Illustration-to-Mosaic CNC File
Budget: $10 – $30 USD
I have a digital illustration that I want to carve on my CNC router as a wood mosaic. The finished piece will be 12” wide × 18” high × ½” thick. Instead of a perfectly flat relief, I’m after a true mosaic feel: individual “tiles” should sit at slightly different heights—only a couple of millimetres of variation—to create a subtle, hand-set look.
Here’s what I need from you:
• Convert the illustration into a tool-path-ready layout that breaks the image into clearly defined tile shapes.
• Apply controlled Z-depth variation across those tiles (≤ 2 mm) so the surface isn’t uniform yet remains millable on common hobby routers.
• Supply the final file in SVG format, organised so each tile’s outline and its corresponding depth are easy to import into CAM software such as VCarve, Aspire, or Fusion 360.
Please keep the geometry clean, avoid stray vectors, and ensure all depths respect the ½-inch stock thickness with safe clearance for a standard ⅛-inch or ¼-inch end mill. If you have suggestions on optimal tile sizing or a smarter depth-mapping approach, feel free to propose them—accuracy and a natural aesthetic are both priorities.
Deliverable: one production-ready SVG I can open, assign tool paths to, and run on my CNC without further editing.
