Summary
What will be done?
The purpose of this project is to deploy and configure a test environment featuring a single Amazon WorkSpaces Personal instance for Robin. This environment will provide seamless integration with existing AWS infrastructure and will enable power users to access current applications and services through a secure, cloud-based virtual desktop. Robin will utilize this environment specifically to validate workflow processes and assess application performance as part of the transition from a traditional RDS setup to Amazon WorkSpaces, ensuring operational continuity and optimal user experience during the migration.
Deploy Amazon WorkSpaces using Quick Setup wizard for rapid pilot testing
Use AWS WorkSpaces Quick Setup to automatically create Simple AD directory
Deploy single WorkSpace instance for Robin using appropriate power user bundle
Automatically configure all required networking, security groups, and IAM roles
Configure test user access and send automated invitation
Create Robin's test user account through Quick Setup wizard
System automatically sends email invitation with WorkSpace connection details
Provide Robin with WorkSpaces client download and login instructions
Test connectivity to existing AWS infrastructure
Validate WorkSpace network access to existing SQL Server, File Server, and RDS
Install and configure SQL Server Management Studio for database testing
Test file server access and RDS database connectivity
Conduct pilot functionality testing with Robin
Test power user workflows and application performance

Amazon WorkSpaces Quick Setup Deployment
Access WorkSpaces Quick Setup wizard
Navigate to AWS WorkSpaces console at https://console.aws.amazon.com/workspaces/
Click "Quick setup" button to launch automated deployment wizard
Quick Setup automatically creates VPC, Simple AD, security groups, and IAM roles
Configure test user and WorkSpace bundle
Enter Robin's details: Username "Robin", First Name "Robin", Email address
Select appropriate WorkSpace bundle for power user requirements (Performance or Power bundle)
Choose Windows 11 operating system for latest features and compatibility
Click "Create WorkSpace" to initiate automated deployment process
Monitor automated deployment process
Wait approximately 20 minutes for AWS to automatically provision all infrastructure
System creates Simple AD directory, configures networking, and deploys WorkSpace
Verify WorkSpace status shows "Available" in console
Confirm Robin receives an automated email invitation with connection details
WorkSpace Client Setup and Initial Access
Provide Robin with client installation instructions
Direct Robin to download WorkSpaces client from https://clients.amazonworkspaces.com/
Assist with client installation on Robin's device (Windows, macOS, iOS, or Android)
Guide Robin through initial WorkSpace connection using registration code from email
Verify initial WorkSpace access and functionality
Confirm Robin can successfully log into WorkSpace using provided credentials
Validate desktop environment loads properly with all standard Windows features
Test basic WorkSpace functionality: file creation, internet access, system settings
Application Installation and Configuration
Install SQL Server connectivity tools
Download and install SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) on WorkSpace
Configure SSMS connection to existing SQL Server instance using server IP/hostname
Test both Windows Authentication and SQL Server Authentication methods
Validate database connectivity by running test queries and viewing table data
Configure File Server access
Map network drives to existing File Server shares using UNC paths (\server\share)
Test file access permissions: create, read, write, modify, and delete operations
Validate file transfer performance and user experience
Set up persistent drive mappings for user convenience
Set up RDS database connectivity
Install appropriate database client tools (MySQL Workbench, pgAdmin, etc.) based on RDS type
Configure database connection strings using RDS endpoint and credentials
Test database connectivity and run sample queries to validate performance
Verify application-level database access if applicable
Install and configure O365 Apps
Setup Outlook
Setup OneDrive for file sync and backup

Test application launch and basic functionality within WorkSpace environment
Conduct comprehensive workflow testing
Have Robin perform typical power user tasks and workflows
Test multitasking capabilities and application performance
Validate integration between applications and existing data sources
Network Connectivity and Performance Validation
Test connectivity to all existing services
Verify network routing from WorkSpace to SQL Server, File Server, and RDS
Test connectivity through existing vMX security appliance
Validate DNS resolution for all internal servers
Confirm firewall rules allow required traffic flows
