Structural Engineer - 24x10 Loft in 30’x24’ Metal Building
Budget: $30 – $250 USD
Looking for recommendations on how to structure a loft floor within a 24x30 metal building.
Loft will be across the backside of the building (24’ ) and come 12’ into the 30’ of space. I need 8’ of clearance below it and hoping to limit the number of posts holding everything up, ideally with a span of ~10 ft in the middle with no posts (So equipment can pull in the front garage doors and drive straight under the loft with plenty of clearance).
I mill my own lumber and will be drying lumber on the loft, so it will need to handle a decent amount of weight. Most of it will be live oak, probably stacked 4-5’ high.
Trus Joist products are easily available from a local lumber yard. Dimensional lumber is also easily available.
I will be doing this work myself and am familiar on the ways floor joists are generally put together, I just don’t trust my abilities to properly size the joists based on the anticipated load. I am also uncertain on the proper way to tie wood into a metal building.
Drawings wouldn’t hurt and if they don’t add much to the cost would be great, but I am mostly looking for the advice. I live in the country and this is unlikely to be seen by a building inspector; but if it was I want it something they would likely approve.
Btw, if it matters, I plan to have a 3’ staircase coming down from the left edge of the loft into the 30’ direction.
To be super specific, I am looking for a paragraph stating things like:
Utilize a 2x10 header and attach it to the metal building utilizing 3x XYC screws placed on each metal stud evenly spaced. Sit the AxB 24’ joists on top of this spaced every 16”, with a YxZ on the outside end. Place a Class #2 6x6 at locations x and y, etc. The net result is that you should be able to safely hold yyyyyy lbs per square foot.
If something is not clear to me, I am expecting you will answer a few questions to clarify included in the price.
