We are seeking a structural engineer to evaluate the behavior of a freestanding steel guardrail system mounted on adjustable rooftop pedestals under wind, seismic, and accidental human impact loads. The objective is to verify overall stability and confirm that the system can safely resist lateral forces without relying on roof penetrations.
Scope of Work
1. Review existing layout drawings, pedestal spacing, and steel member specifications.
2. Develop a structural model (FEM software such as SAP2000, STAAD, or equivalent) to analyze combined wind, seismic, and point-load cases in accordance with IBC and OSHA guardrail requirements.
3. Provide a calculation package clearly identifying governing load combinations, safety factors, and any resulting support or anchor reactions (if applicable).
4. Determine the maximum allowable pedestal height that can safely resist lateral loads without supplemental bracing or reinforcement.
5. Evaluate the potential for system migration, particularly when installed on sloped or tapered surfaces, and recommend a maximum allowable roof slope to prevent movement.
6. Summarize any reinforcement, ballast, or design modifications required to achieve code compliance.
