Carport Design - Simple Structural Engineering Calculations
Budget: $60 – $100 USD
I need a simple carport design and structural engineering calculations for a single freestanding carport.
Requirements:
- Material: Wood framing with metal roof
- 14' high on the high side and 12' high on the low side
- 12' wide and 30' long
- Using 6x6 (5.5" x 5.5") treated wood posts spaced every 6' down each 30' wall and anchored in cement footings
- Roof design: 2/12 pitch single slope roof
See attached image of existing carport. I want the new design to be very similar in style. I also created a sketch of the design.
I need to know what size rafters to use (maybe 2x12) that will be strong enough. I also need to know if 24" spacing for the rafters is sufficient. I also need to know what thickness of beam I should use on top of the 6x6 posts.
VERY IMPORTANT: the snow load for this structure must be 75psf as the area gets heavy snow.
Note, this is not for a permit or needing any engineering stamps or full detailed plans...this is just for my own information to make sure the structure will be safe. So, I don't need a full design, I just need to kow the answers about the thickness of the truss, beam and rafter spacing. Also, if there are any other safety measure to put in place to reach the required snow load (methods for attaching/tying materials, angled cross members to add increased strength, etc...).
Ideal Skills and Experience:
- Structural engineering expertise
- Experience with wooden structures
- Knowledge of low-pitch roof designs
