Electrical Engineer Brief for USB-C Power Strip Design
Project Title: USB-C Power Strip Design for Charging 4 Laptops Simultaneously
Objective:
We are developing a compact and high-performance USB-C power strip that can charge four MacBook Air laptops simultaneously via USB-C. The goal is to design the electrical schematic and circuit diagrams for the product, ensuring it meets modern Power Delivery (PD) standards, includes necessary safety features, and is suitable for production.
Scope of Work:
We require an experienced electrical engineer to:
Create a Detailed Schematic Diagram:
Design the power conversion system (from 100-240V AC to USB-C output).
Integrate USB Power Delivery (PD) protocols for dynamic voltage adjustment.
Include individual port protection circuits (e.g., overcurrent, overvoltage, surge protection, short-circuit).
Ensure the inclusion of thermal protection and any necessary EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) considerations.
Component Selection:
Select appropriate components such as power management ICs, capacitors, diodes, transistors, and voltage regulators.
Ensure that all components meet safety standards for use in indoor environments (e.g., UL, CE certified components).
Provide recommendations on suitable suppliers for components.
Design PCB Layout:
Design the PCB layout based on the finalized schematic, ensuring space optimization for components and good thermal management.
Ensure the design is compact enough to fit within the housing dimensions (max 15 cm x 8 cm x 4 cm).
Safety and Compliance Considerations:
Ensure the design is compliant with safety standards like CE, UKCA, RoHS, WEEE, and local Middle Eastern standards.
Implement necessary features like fuse protection, surge protection, and overcurrent/overvoltage protection circuits.
Prototyping Support:
Provide support during prototype creation to ensure the schematic and design are executed correctly.
Work with the manufacturer (if needed) to adjust the design during the prototyping phase based on testing feedback.
Documentation:
Deliver the final schematic diagrams in a standard format (e.g., PDF or .sch).
Provide PCB design files and Gerber files needed for manufacturing.
Supply a Bill of Materials (BOM) for all components used in the design.
Project Requirements:
Experience:
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in designing power supplies, USB-C PD circuits, and consumer electronics. Experience with designing compact power strips or charging hubs would be a plus.
Skills:
Proficient in electrical circuit design.
Experience with USB Power Delivery (PD) standards and power management ICs.
Familiarity with designing for safety certifications (e.g., CE, UL).
Proficient in using PCB design software (e.g., KiCad, Eagle, Altium).
Ability to provide documentation and detailed reports for manufacturers.
Communication:
The engineer must be able to communicate clearly throughout the process and work collaboratively with other team members (e.g., manufacturers, designers).
Deliverables:
Complete Schematic Diagram for the power strip.
PCB Design Files (Gerber files, layout).
Bill of Materials (BOM) for all components.
Documentation on safety features and component selection.
Prototyping Support and assistance with testing during the prototype phase (if applicable).
