PROJECT BRIEF

Solar System Character Design Series – 1930s Rubber Hose Style

1. Project Overview

This project involves designing a cohesive set of anthropomorphic planet characters based on the classic 1930s rubber hose cartoon style. Each planet in the solar system will be reimagined as a lively, expressive character, inspired by early animation aesthetics (rounded shapes, flexible limbs, exaggerated expressions), while maintaining a distinct visual identity for each planet.

The final character set should feel unified as a collection, yet each planet must be immediately recognizable through silhouette, design elements, and overall presentation.

2. Visual Style & Aesthetic

Primary Style Reference:
• 1930s rubber hose animation
• Simple, rounded forms
• Bendable limbs with no visible joints
• White gloves and oversized shoes encouraged
• Expressive eyes and mouths
• Minimal shading with bold, clean outlines

Tone:
• Playful
• Charming
• Vintage
• Whimsical

Modern Touch (Optional):
• Slightly refined line work or color treatment for modern clarity, while preserving the vintage feel

3. Character Lineup

The character set will include the following planets:
• Mercury
• Venus
• Earth
• Mars
• Jupiter
• Saturn
• Uranus
• Neptune

Each planet should be designed as an anthropomorphic character while reflecting recognizable planetary features (such as size, color, rings, or atmospheric elements) translated into a rubber hose cartoon style.

4. Design Guidelines
• Characters must clearly belong to the same visual universe
• Consistent line weight, glove style, and footwear across all designs
• Planetary scale differences should be suggested in a cartoon-friendly way
• Strong silhouettes for instant recognizability
• Facial structure and expression style should be consistent across the set

5. Deliverables
• Full-body character designs for each planet
• One neutral pose per character
• One or more additional poses for visual variation
• Optional expression sheets
• Transparent background versions

6. Intended Use

7. Success Criteria
• Clear visual cohesion across all characters
