Thematic GIS Storymap Development
Budget: $30 – $250 USD
I'm seeking a GIS professional to create a StoryMap featuring multiple thematic maps. These maps will need to highlight:
Mapping Access to Education for Young Girls in Nepal
Access to education has been cited as one of the most important mechanisms we have for protecting the safety and wellbeing, both present and future, for young girls across the world. There are complications to this which I hope to explore in the future, but this project would present a StoryMap sequence displaying the complexities of access itself, while discussing barriers and alternatives to education.
School Accessibility: Locations of schools across the country analyzed with accessibility to girls, considering distance, terrain, and transportation. If possible, overlay elevation data.
Socioeconomic factors: Overlaying poverty rates, literacy, and school attendance rates to identify regions where girls face the most barriers to education and figure out why—is it physical accessibility? Cultural norms? Caste/inequality? Extreme poverty? Climate change? Etc.
Dropout rates: Focus on factors such as early childhood marriage, child labor rates, access to menstrual hygiene, etc by province or district.
Disaster and climate resilience: How vulnerable are schools to natural disasters? Satellite data or government disaster risk maps. This would be related to dropout rates and the StoryMap would discuss how climate change exacerbates the existing challenges seen in the previous maps.
You will need to be skilled in creating thematic maps and have a solid understanding of GIS principles. Experience dealing with climate data and creating maps based on such data will be an added advantage. The ability to visualize complex data sets in an engaging, easy to understand way is crucial for this project.
If some data is not available, that is okay, just try to incorporate whatever can be done from this and please let me know if you have any questions.
