Illustrator Needed for Children’s Philosophy Book (Hand-Drawn Storybook Style)

Job ID: 40361293

Budget: $50 – $100 AUD

I am seeking an illustrator for a picture-and-verse philosophy book for families. The book humorously explores ethical and social issues surrounding the idea of bringing back extinct species. The manuscript has been accepted for publication, and I need a consistent set of illustrations to accompany it.

The illustration style should be hand-drawn, ideally ink line with watercolour wash or similar, balancing soft, atmospheric scenes with expressive, slightly caricatured character work. The tone is reflective yet humorous, requiring subtle emotional expressions such as curiosity, puzzlement, reflection, disapproval, intellectual intensity, and greed/avarice.

For this trial project, I would like to commission one scene:
Scene: Academic debate at an institute
- Approximately 15 academics seated in discussion
- Chaired by Professor Spinnox
- Professor Grist rising to make a point
- Intellectual but slightly humorous atmosphere
- Two boobook owls observing from wooden rafters above

This test piece will help select the right illustrator for the full project. The creator will be financially rewarded for their work on the full project based on its scope and requirements.

Budget: AUD 100 for the trial illustration

Timeline: 14 days

What I’m Looking For:
- Strong drawing ability (especially human figures and facial expressions)
- Experience with children’s books or narrative illustration
- Ability to maintain consistent character design across scenes

To Apply:
Please include:
1. Portfolio of hand-drawn (non-AI) work
2. Examples of character-based illustrations
3. Your approach to developing consistent characters
4. Quote for:
- Single test illustration
- Full project (optional at this stage)
