Functional Mechanical Prototype Design UK only
Budget: £250 – £750 GBP
Project: Prototype for a Compact, Automated Device - UK only
Project Overview:
I am a product designer developing a prototype for a small, automated domestic device. I have created a 3D-printed enclosure and selected the electronic components. My goal is to find a mechanical engineer with strong prototyping skills who can handle the physical assembly and coding to create a fully functional prototype. The final product must be contained within the 3D-printed structure. If needed the 3d printed shell can be adapted to the electronics
Key Responsibilities:
The primary role of the engineer will be to ensure the entire prototype is functional and self-contained. The main tasks will include:
Component Integration: Ensuring the optimal placement and mounting of all electronic and mechanical parts (a DC motor, two water pumps, a temperature sensor, and a microcontroller) to fit within the custom 3D-printed shell. The design must be functional and easy to assemble.
Part Design: Creating or refining small mechanical parts (e.g., custom mounts, brackets, couplings) that are suitable for 3D printing and can be used to securely hold the components together.
Arduino Coding: Writing and debugging the Arduino code to control all components—including the motor, pumps, and sensor—to automate the device's functions.
Tolerance Analysis: Providing guidance on tolerances and clearances to ensure all moving and static parts fit together smoothly after 3D printing.
Assembly and Testing: Physically assembling the prototype and conducting tests to verify that all components work together as intended.
Required Skills and Experience:
Proven experience in mechanical design and rapid prototyping.
Proficiency in Arduino programming and electronics integration.
Excellent communication skills and an ability to work collaboratively.
This project is a great opportunity for an engineer with a passion for prototyping and end-to-end innovation. I am looking for a professional who can bring a fresh perspective to solve the mechanical and electronic challenges of a compact design.
Deliverables:
A complete, commented, and functional Arduino sketch.
A detailed assembly and testing log.
Please provide a brief overview of your relevant experience and a portfolio of similar projects if available.
