Fix Frame Skipping on RPI IMX296 with High FPS Recording (1988 FPS)
Budget: ₹1,500 – ₹12,500 INR
I’m using an RPI IMX296 image sensor with the following capabilities:
Resolution: 1456 x 1088 at 60 FPS.
Region of Interest (ROI) Mode: 1456 x 4 resolution with a maximum frame rate of 1988 FPS.
While the sensor works correctly and libcamera detects the 1988 FPS, there is significant frame skipping when attempting to record at this high frame rate.
The IMX296 is an industrial-grade CMOS sensor that supports a high frame rate, particularly useful for high-speed vision applications. However, at extreme FPS (1988 in ROI mode), the Raspberry Pi 4 setup encounters performance issues, likely due to data handling or system resource limitations. This includes potential I2C bandwidth constraints or insufficient buffer handling in libcamera.
