Creating from scratch SMTP following RFC 5321 using C or Python

as the title says I need to:
implement a SMTP protocol following RFCs 5321
implement a library protocol
Implement test client and test server, run against existing implementations
(test client)(self developed DHCP library) <--> (Existing DHCP server implementation)
(Existing DHCP Client implemtation) <--> (self developed DHCP library)(test server)
I need someone to guide me. this is very challenging for me. currently it is very chaotic for me because I have no previous knowledge about networking. also I am not a professional coder.
