Executive Operational Power BI Dashboard
Budget: $25 – $50 CAD
Project Objective
We are building a complete reporting environment that connects our operational SQL database to a clean, intuitive Power BI reporting suite designed for two primary audiences:
1. Executive Leadership – high-level commercial insights and company performance
2. Operational Managers – actionable operational metrics and drill-downs
The goal is to transform raw operational data into clear, reliable decision-making dashboards that update automatically and can be trusted across the organization.
The final solution should deliver real-time business intelligence including revenue performance, operational activity, and commercial trends.
⸻
Data Environment
Source System
SQL Server operational database containing:
• Sales transactions
• Customers
• Products
• Orders
• Inventory
• Operational metrics
The database is currently not structured for reporting, so part of this project includes building a reporting layer optimized for analytics.
⸻
Project Scope
1. Data Architecture & SQL Reporting Layer
Design a reporting-optimized SQL layer between the operational database and Power BI.
Tasks include:
• Review current SQL schema and understand key operational tables
• Design reporting views or reporting tables
• Build stored procedures or scheduled queries to populate reporting tables
• Optimize query performance for Power BI
Build a clean enterprise-grade Power BI semantic model.
Responsibilities:
• Import SQL reporting tables
• Define relationships
• Create calculated columns where necessary
• Write DAX measures
• Build a reusable metric layer
Example measures:
Revenue Metrics
• Total Revenue
• Revenue YTD
• Revenue vs Budget
• Revenue vs Prior Year
• Revenue Growth %
Sales Metrics
• Sales by Region
• Sales by Product Category
• Sales by Customer Segment
• Average Order Value
Operational Metrics
• Orders Processed
• Open Orders
• Order Fulfillment Time
• Inventory Turnover
• Backorders
Performance Metrics
• Sales per Rep
• Margin by Product
• Revenue per Customer
• Customer Concentration
Model expectations
• Efficient star schema
• Measures centralized in measure tables
• Clean naming conventions
• Optimized for performance
⸻
3. Executive Dashboard
A high-level summary view designed for CEOs and senior leadership.
Key design principles
• Clean and minimal
• KPI driven
• Focus on trends and growth
• Quick insights within 10 seconds
Top KPI Row
