TASK – Introduction to measurement
Provide answers to the following questions. These questions are similar to those completed in the workshop sessions but applied to a different project.
The focus of this coursework is the use of dimension paper and your accuracy of quantification. For each question, you need to identify the actual quantity of material required, and then use the information provided to answer the questions.
All work is to be completed on dimension paper. All costing works are to be completed in the waste column ONLY – no costing is to be in the dimension columns.
Please make sure that you clearly identify each question/answer in your work.
The following exercises shall be done with reference to the following drawing:
Drawing: 559/01 and 559/02 – Proposed four bedroom house
1.The owner wishes to replace the old skirting and the coving in both the Lounge and Dining room. Calculate the cost of buying the skirting boards and coving, using the following information :-
i.The skirting boards are available in 2.4m lengths, a pack of four costs £25.00
ii.The coving are available in 3.0m lengths, cost per length is £5.00
iii.Allow a 10% wastage on any materials.
iv.Assume all single door openings are 910mm wide.
v.Assume all double door openings are 1820mm wide.
vi.Patio door width is on the drawing.

2.The floor of the kitchen is to be finished with marble effect floor tiles, each measuring 300mm x 300mm.
i.If there are 10 tiles in a pack, calculate the number of packs required.
ii.The cost of one pack is £25, labour cost is £15 per m2, calculate the cost of tiling the kitchen floor.
iii.Allow a 10% wastage on any materials.
iv.Measure under all kitchen units.

3.The owner wants to replace the floor finishes in Bedrooms 1 & 2 and they have two options; either use softwood floor boards or chipboard flooring. Help them find out which is the cheaper option using the following information :-
i.Floorboards cost £15 for a pack. One pack covers an area of 1.71m2. Cost of labour is £13 per m2.
ii.One sheet of chipboard costs £8. One sheet covers an area of 1.44m2. Labour cost is £5.50 per m2
iii.Allow a 10% wastage on any materials.
iv.Do not measure into the wardrobes for this task.
v.Assume that the wardrobe projection in both rooms is 100mm.

4.The internal wall and ceiling surfaces for Bedrooms 1 & 2 require a coat of emulsion paint. Calculate the area for the painting works. Measure the ceilings separate to all the walls and make sure you clearly identify each rooms measurements, as well as the totals.
i.Assume all single door openings are 2100 x 910mm
ii.Assume all double door openings are 2100 x 1820mm
iii.Window sizes are on the drawing.
iv.Do not measure into the wardrobes for this task (but do paint the wall around the wardrobe door).

5.The owner wishes to replace the roof covering on their house.
i.Calculate the area of roof tiling to the main house.
ii.Assume a 300mm overhang on the eaves
iii.Assuming that using 600 x 300mm slates with a 75mm lap gives a coverage of 12.5 slates per m2, calculate how many slates will be required.
iv.Assume a waste allowance of 5%
v.Ignore the dorma window and the porch (assume the roof has two simple uninterrupted pitches)
