Chartered Engineer Structural Sign-Off
Budget: £100 – £500 GBP
My self-build home is finished and all structural calculations and drawings were already approved when construction began. Unfortunately, the private Building Control firm that issued the original approval went into liquidation just before final inspection, forcing me to move the file to the local authority.
The council will only close the file once a Chartered Member of IStructE reviews the existing documentation and issues a formal letter (or certificate) confirming that the design remains sound. My current engineer produced the calcs but holds Graduate membership, so he cannot sign them off himself.
Scope of the review
– Foundations
– Basement retaining elements
– Primary beams and their connections
– Roof structure
I can supply:
• Full calculation pack in PDF and original spreadsheets
• GA and detail drawings (PDF)
• Photographic record of key stages during the build
• Any supplementary notes from site meetings or inspections already carried out
What I need from you
1. A desktop review of the material above (no invasive opening-up is possible).
2. Any brief clarification requests to satisfy your professional duty.
3. A signed letter or certificate, on headed paper with your chartered number and suitable PI cover referenced, confirming that the design and construction as documented are structurally adequate for the intended use and comply with current UK Building Regulations.
Turnaround: The council is ready to sign off building control as soon as they receive your certification, so a prompt review would be appreciated.
If you are a Chartered Structural Engineer comfortable providing professional sign-off on another engineer’s calculations and drawings, please get in touch, letting me know your availability and PI limit. The "Graduate" Engineer who is highly experienced has his own PI, but I don't know how the process works, if a chartered engineer checks the work, who's insurance comes into play.
