basic degree analysis of Twitter, Github, Pokec, and Tumblr

Job ID: 31771096

Budget: $30 – $250 USD

Open this research article (Links to an external site.). Look at Table 1 on the fourth page, which shows some information about three datasets for three online social networks. They are all directed networks: Github is a software sharing platform, Pokec is a domestic social networking website in Slovakia, and the other is Twitter. Also read the table caption below it.

(1) For the Twitter dataset, how does the average number of followers compare with the median number of followers? In less than 40 words, explain what this indicates in terms of heterogeneity of number of followers.

(2) How does the standard deviation of the number of followers on the Pokec network compare with the average in-degree? In less than 40 words, explain what this indicates in terms of heterogeneity of number of followers.

(3) Remember that "density" is the link existence ratio. It tells us what fraction of possible connections do actually exist in the network. Remember the formula that gives the density of an undirected network in terms of the average degree and the number of nodes: density= kbar/(N-1). This formula is true for both directed and undirected networks. With this knowledge, calculate the densities of these three online social networks. Which of them is the most dense?

Now open this research article (Links to an external site.) about Tumblr (which is a microblogging and social network website), and look at Table 1 at the top of the third page. We only use the top two rows of this table. If you can't open the link, the article is also attached to this assignment for easy download: Tumblr-2.pdf Download Tumblr-2.pdf

(4) Remember the formula which gives the average degree of an undirected network in terms of L (number of links) and N (number of nodes). There is a factor "2" in that formula. If we have a directed network and we want to find the average in-degree, do we still need that factor "2"? In less than 30 words, explain why. Your answer must begin with yes or no, followed by your explanation.

(5) The Tumblr friendship network is directed, similar to Instagram and Twitter, where we have follower-followee relations that are not necessarily reciprocated. Using the information in the first column of Table 1 of the research article for the Tumblr network, find the average number of followers.

Submission:

For word count, you can use Microsoft word or other text editors, or this online word counter, for example: https://wordcounter.net/ (Links to an external site.)

You can either write down your answers by hand (readable and tidy so that the graders can easily follow) and scan them and send the image file, or type your answers and submit the text files.
