Retirement Apartment Home Addition
Budget: $250 – $750 USD
I’m ready to plan a one-story, one-bedroom apartment that will attach to my existing two-story timber-framed home. Because this new space is for our retirement, easy access, comfortable circulation and a seamless architectural transition to the current house are essential.
Placement & massing
The apartment may need to “wrap” the back corner—partly off the rear façade and partly along one side—so I’m looking for creative footprints that respect setbacks, maximise light and preserve yard space.
Style & exterior harmony
Our main house is traditional in appearance and I’d like the addition to echo that vocabulary even though it will not be timber-framed. Think matching roof pitches, complementary siding and trim, and proportions that feel as if they have always belonged.
Interior programme
• One generous bedroom with good closet space
• Full kitchen sized for daily cooking, not just a kitchenette
• Dedicated laundry room (stacked appliances acceptable)
• Direct access to a small private patio for morning coffee and planting boxes
What I need from you
1. Two or more concept layouts showing how the apartment can fit the chosen corner.
2. Scaled floor plan, roof plan and exterior elevations ready for discussion with my local builder.
3. A simple 3-D massing or render so we can visualise roof lines and material transitions.
4. A brief note on structural tie-ins and utility connections (water, power, HVAC) so I understand feasibility before commissioning full permit drawings.
5. Existing house is 26' X 36' two story, four bedroom house with an attic and an added on laundry and full bath (shower).
I can provide photographs, basic dimensions and, if helpful, the original house plans. Looking forward to seeing how you would transform this idea into a retirement-ready home-within-a-home.
