Redesign Staircase for Efficiency and Comfort

Job ID: 39841761

Budget: ₹600 – ₹1,500 INR

I have a concern regarding the staircase design in my house.

The brickwork step width (walking width) is currently 3 ft.

The overall staircase box width is about 7.6 ft.

The gap (hollow space) between two adjacent flights is about 17–18 inches.

My preference is to increase the usable step width and at the same time reduce or eliminate the hollow space between the flights (as I feel 17–18 inches is excessive and wastes space).

Could you please advise:

How can we reduce the hollow space between the two flights — ideally keeping it around 0–6 inches or using a dog-legged design?

Is it possible to increase the step width (beyond 3 ft) by adjusting the stair layout within the 7.6 ft box?

Would shifting the alignment of the two flights or slightly reducing tread depth (if it is larger than standard 10–12 inches) help in optimizing both the step width and the gap?

My goal is to have a staircase that is comfortable (wider steps), safe, and space-efficient (minimal hollow gap). Please suggest the best possible modification before further finishing work is done.
