Garage door headers support

We need to eliminate a 2' wall section between two garage doors (to make one door opening) That will require the two existing 6 x 10 headers to be supported. We are proposing a steel plate, bolted to the inside of the headers to replace the wall. If this is a viable option, please advise on: size and gauge of metal, number, layout and size of fasteners (Simpson SDS or similar preferred).
