Make Text on layered Photoshop Book Cover 'Pop' Against Background Image (Layer/Text Shadow / Glow)

Time estimate: under 60 minutes.
Overview
The cover is complete and all text is final. No text changes are needed on the front cover. The only job is to make the front cover text pop cleanly against the background image. There are currently two placeholder transparent blue layers in the file that were attempts to do this — you can delete or ignore these and replace them with proper solutions.
The Problem
The background image has two areas that are bleeding into the text:
The upper third of the front cover has a starfield sky — stars and cosmic texture are showing through behind the gold title text (THE / KYBALION / UNLOCKED) and making it harder to read
The lower portion of the front cover has a golden light pool where the central figure is standing — this bright warm light is bleeding into the "Master Your Reality." text and reducing its legibility
Task 1 — Fix the title area (upper front cover)
Create a new layer above the background image but below all text layers. In the upper third of the front cover panel only, apply a semi-transparent dark overlay — deep navy or black, approximately 25–35% opacity — to subdue the starfield behind the gold title text. This should feel like the sky naturally deepens in colour toward the top, not like a rectangle has been placed over it. Use a gradient or soft-edged mask so the bottom edge of this overlay fades to fully transparent, blending naturally into the crowd scene below. No hard edges visible anywhere.
Task 2 — Fix the hook line area (lower front cover)
Create a new layer above the background image but below the "Master Your Reality." text layer. In the area directly behind that text only, apply a semi-transparent dark gradient — black or deep navy fading to transparent — so the text sits against a slightly darker surface. Opacity approximately 30–40%. The gradient should fade upward to transparent so it blends naturally into the golden light scene above it. Again no hard edges visible.
Task 3 — Add text layer styles to all front cover text
Add a drop shadow or outer glow to each of the following text layers so they separate cleanly from the background even without the overlays:
THE (white text, top)
KYBALION (gold text)
UNLOCKED (gold text)
The Neuroscience of Mental Alchemy (white italic)
Master Your Reality. (white bold italic)
For the gold text (KYBALION and UNLOCKED): use Outer Glow, blend mode Multiply, colour deep navy or black, opacity 70%, size 12–15px.
For the white text elements: use Drop Shadow, colour black, opacity 75%, angle 120 degrees, distance 4px, size 10px.
All five text elements should have consistent treatment. Copy and paste layer styles between layers to keep them identical where appropriate.
Task 4 — Resize for hardback (8.25 × 11)
Once the 8.5×11 file is complete and looking correct, duplicate it and adapt for the hardback size. The client will provide the official KDP Amazon template for 8.25×11 at 406 pages separately.
Replace the existing Amazon template layer with the new 8.25×11 template
Adjust canvas width to match the new template exactly
Reposition all elements to sit correctly within the new guides
Check all text is within safe zones on both front and back cover
Nothing else changes — all text, images and styling are identical to the 8.5×11 version
Deliverables
Two completed layered PSD files — one at 8.5×11 and one at 8.25×11. Do not flatten. The client will export PDFs.
