Bilingual Book Design: Malaysian Family Memoir
Budget: $250 – $750 AUD
I have gathered years of interviews, photos, and handwritten notes that trace my mother’s journey from a kampung childhood to the family matriarch she became. Now I want those memories to live in a beautifully designed book that feels unmistakably Malaysian. The manuscript sits at roughly 20,000words; the text is in English, but key phrases, proverbs, and chapter titles need to appear in Malay so the design must comfortably weave both languages together.
The heart of the book is her personal life stories, so every layout decision—from typography to imagery—should draw readers into those intimate moments. Think warm, reader-friendly fonts, balanced white space, and subtle visual cues that evoke home without distracting from her words. When it makes sense, gentle nods to traditional patterns, local colours, or familiar textures are welcome, provided they stay secondary to the narrative.
Deliverables I need
• Full interior layout (print-ready PDF and source files in InDesign or equivalent)
• Matching cover design (front, spine, back, plus wrap-around for hardback option)
• A style guide outlining fonts, colour palette, and placement rules so future reprints stay consistent
Acceptance criteria
• Malay text elements flow naturally alongside English with correct diacritics
• Images and pull-quotes placed as marked in my manuscript comments (open to suggestions)
• Final files meet standard offset-printing specs (CMYK, 300 dpi, bleed set) and pass a pre-press check, photos black and white with coloured options in appendix
I’ll provide the manuscript, high-resolution photos, and a rough chapter map. Once the first sample spread is approved, we can move in batches until the full book is ready for press.
