BLE Enabled ESP32 Umpire Indicator Prototype
Budget: $750 – $1,500 CAD
ESP32 Bluetooth-Enabled Umpire Indicator Prototype with Rotary Encoders (BLE Sync to Mobile App)
*We have two full time App developers that you can work with.
Project Description:
Seeking an experienced embedded systems engineer to develop a functional prototype of a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) digital umpire indicator for slo-pitch softball.
Reference: See attached image of standard Champion 4-dial indicator (Balls, Strikes, Outs, Innings).
Requirements:
• Replicate tactile dial feel using rotary encoders (notched/clicking action for no-look operation).
• ESP32 (preferred) or equivalent microcontroller with BLE to transmit real-time count updates (balls/strikes/outs/innings) to a mobile app.
• Device pairs with our existing slo-pitch live-streaming + scoring app and updates game state / stream overlays in real time.
• Battery-powered, compact, rugged enclosure suitable for outdoor field use (start with 3D-printed or modified off-the-shelf shell).
• Firmware to detect encoder changes and send structured data packets (e.g., JSON or custom GATT service).
Deliverables (MVP Scope):
1. Working hardware prototype with all dials functional + reliable BLE connectivity.
2. Firmware source code with documentation.
3. Basic app-side integration examples (Flutter/React Native BLE libraries acceptable; we’ll handle final app integration).
4. Schematics and testing notes.
Required Skills:
• ESP32 / Arduino / Firmware development
• Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) implementation (GATT, notifications)
• Rotary encoder integration and debouncing
• Electronics prototyping and basic PCB design
• Nice-to-have: Sports scoring devices, IoT hardware, 3D modeling, mobile app BLE experience
Budget & Timeline:
• Fixed-price, milestone-based (target $600–$1200CAD depending on scope — open to realistic quotes but this is a simple build.
• Goal: Working PoC in 1-2
Weeks
• Durham Region / GTA Ontario preferred for in-person testing/meetings, but strong remote candidates welcome.
Bid Instructions: Please include:
• Links/examples of similar ESP32 + BLE + rotary encoder projects
• Proposed timeline and milestone breakdown
• Any clarifying questions
This is an exciting sports-tech project with real-world use in slo-pitch tournaments and strong potential for production scaling.
