Crypto payments on Wordpress with WooCommerce

My WooCommerce-based store needs the option for customers to pay in Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin. I want to keep complete control of the funds, so I’m leaning toward a bespoke payment gateway plugin rather than relying on a third-party SaaS. The finished gateway should slot in cleanly alongside existing WooCommerce payment methods, expose clear callback/webhook events for order status updates, and store transaction data inside WordPress without bloating the database.

I’m undecided on whether incoming crypto should be auto-converted to fiat or left as native coins, so I’ll need your guidance on best practices, risks and costs for both approaches. I also don’t have a wallet provider locked in yet, so please be prepared to recommend secure, self-custody options (hardware or multisig) that integrate smoothly with the gateway code.
