1. Background
Living organisms interact with their environment to form an ecosystem. To understand the relationship between plants, soil, water, and air, direct observation through a mini ecosystem is needed.
2. Objectives
To identify biotic and abiotic components in an ecosystem
To observe plant growth
To understand the balance of a simple ecosystem
3. Tools and Materials
A clear used plastic bottle
Humus soil
Small pebbles
Small plants (moss/grass)
Water as needed
Scissors
4. Procedures
1. Cut the plastic bottle into two parts.
2. Put small pebbles at the bottom as the base layer.
3. Add humus soil on top of the pebbles.
4. Plant the small plants into the soil.
5. Water lightly.
6. Close the bottle and place it in a bright area.
5. Observation Results
The plants stayed alive and grew
Water evaporation occurred inside the bottle
The mini ecosystem survived for several days
