Job Title: GIS & CAD Specialist (Remote, Freelance / On-Call)

Location: Remote (U.S.-based preferred, experience with New York State GIS data ideal)

Overview:
We are a U.S.-based design and planning studio seeking a skilled and detail-oriented GIS Specialist with strong CAD integration experience. This is a freelance, on-call role ideally suited for someone interested in building a long-term working relationship and who has a sharp aesthetic eye as well as strong technical skills.

Scope of Work:
You will assist in preparing layered GIS and CAD files for a variety of projects, typically involving:

Parcel/survey mapping

Vector-based topographic overlays

Aerial imagery alignment (semi-transparent overlays)

Optional advanced mapping (hydrology, slope analysis, viewsheds)

All work must be compatible with QGIS (preferred) and AutoCAD LITE. Projects primarily focus on properties within New York State, leveraging data from its free GIS data portal.

Responsibilities:

Convert surveys or parcel boundaries into accurate GIS base layers

Create vector topographic maps and overlay aerial imagery

Map hydrology, slope, and viewsheds as needed

Deliver clean, clearly layered GIS and CAD files

Produce high-quality JPG exports of individual layers and final composite maps

Ensure file compatibility with QGIS and AutoCAD LITE

Maintain a visually polished, presentation-ready output

Deliverables for Each Project:

GIS file (.qgz or similar) with clearly labeled, separate layers

CAD file (.dwg) compatible with AutoCAD LITE

High-resolution JPGs of each layer and the final composite image

Requirements:

Proficiency in QGIS (required); knowledge of ArcGIS is optional but not necessary

Strong CAD experience, specifically with AutoCAD LITE-compatible output

Familiarity with publicly available New York State GIS data

A strong sense of visual design and map readability

Ability to work independently and on-call as projects arise

Excellent communication and file management practices

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with land planning, architecture, or landscape architecture workflows

Background in geography, cartography, urban planning, or a related field

Portfolio of similar GIS/CAD mapping work
