Architectural Interpretation of Parc de la Ciutadella Building

Job ID: 40054543

Budget: $30 – $250 USD

The project is located in the heart of Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona, within the former Caballeriza de la Guardia Urbana, an industrial-style building shaped as a large hall. Its architectural identity is defined by three pyramid-shaped roofs that crown the volume and structure its interior rhythm.

The proposal begins by reinterpreting the existing hall through the creation of a horizontal band of uses that runs across the building. This band acts as both a unifying element and an organizing layer for the program. On one side, the band opens to a space designed for vegetation and new perspectives toward the park and the interior; on the opposite side, it frees up an open, flexible zone for multipurpose activities.

The original hall is composed of a module divided into three programmatic sections: two of medium size and one larger central bay. Building upon this logic, an extension to the right is proposed—another large-scale piece conceived as a circulation and transition space. This new volume is essentially structural, revealing only its open framework without any façade, slab, or enclosure. A pergola echoing the geometry of the hall completes the intervention, prolonging the original form through an open, lightweight structure.

Adjacent to this structural extension, a second attached volume is introduced—a glazed enclosure built with reclaimed or historically resonant materials, designed to function as a classroom space. On the opposite side of the hall, a similar structural intervention mirrors the initial extension, establishing balance and continuity within the overall composition.
To the left of the building, another glass volume is added, this time conceived as a small botanical garden, a luminous space where vegetation becomes an integral part of the architectural experience.

A key element of the project is the wooden pathway that originates in the park and extends directly into the building. This path becomes the main circulation axis, weaving through the four principal components of the proposal. It guides visitors fluidly across interior and exterior, reinforcing the connection between architecture, landscape, and the historical memory of the site.
