Classical Greek Play Translation

Job ID: 40089363

Budget: €30 – €250 EUR

I need an entire Classical Greek tragedy rendered into clear, contemporary English. The translation is aimed at a broad, non-specialist audience, so readability comes first, yet I do want echoes of the original metre and poetic texture wherever they can live comfortably inside modern phrasing. Think of it as a balanced approach: neither a literal, line-by-line crib nor a free adaptation, but something that lets a lay reader feel the rhythm of the ancients without stumbling over archaisms.

The source text is ready in digital form. I will supply the accepted critical edition plus a few scholarly notes that mark key puns and cultural references; you are welcome to suggest additional glosses where needed. Because this is for general readership, footnotes should stay concise and explanatory rather than heavily academic.

Deliverables
• Complete English translation in Word and PDF
• Brief translator’s preface (1-2 pages) explaining your approach to metre vs. readability
• Light annotation: cultural references, word-play, mythological allusions

Please mention any prior work with Ancient Greek drama—Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, or comedy—so I can gauge stylistic fit. If you already use tools such as TLG, Perseus, or Liddell-Scott on a daily basis, that’s a plus, but the craft of poetic English will weigh heaviest in my decision.
