Since the sprint start is only a very short part of the entire sprint race, just how important is it really?
* Let's say we have two athletes: Athlete 1 and Athlete 2. Except for the start, they are equally fast. Say Athlete 1 reaches the end of the start in 0.7 seconds with a horizontal velocity of 7 m/s. Athlete 2 reaches the end of the start in 1.0 seconds with a horizontal velocity of 5 m/ s. Already, athlete 1 has a significant advantage.
* For the rest of the race, Athlete 1 and Athlete 2 accelerate at the same rate and reach the same top speed. However, Athlete 1 will still increase their lead throughout the acceleration. Why? Athlete 1's speed advantage of 2 m/s will allow Athlete 1 to increase their lead until Athlete 2 finally matches their speed at the end of the acceleration. So for more than half of the race, Athlete 1 will have been moving away from Athlete 2.
