Australia's HOBART (AP) — Just days after 14 sperm whales were discovered beached on an island off the northwest coast of the Australian state, Tasmania's west coast has seen the stranding of some 230 whales.
According to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, the pilot whales in the stranded pod on Ocean Beach in Macquarie Harbour look to be at least half still alive.
The department reported that a team from the Marine Conservation Program was putting together whale rescue equipment and moving toward the scene.
