There was once a village nestled among the mountains. The people there were peaceful and kind-hearted, but their lives were troubled by a fearsome lion. Every night, the lion would enter the village, kill their livestock, and sometimes even injure the villagers.
Tired and terrified, the villagers gathered one day and prayed to Goddess Parvati, “O Mother! Please protect us. This lion won’t let us live in peace.”
Goddess Parvati was moved by the suffering of her devotees. From a peak in the Himalayas, she transformed herself — into a form both beautiful and fierce — the form of Goddess Durga.
That very night, when the lion returned to the village, he saw a radiant woman standing amidst a blinding light. Her eyes flashed like lightning, and in her hand, she held a mighty trident. The lion was taken aback but his pride pushed him to fight.
The lion growled, “Who are you to stop me?”
Goddess Durga replied, “I am Parvati in her fierce form. You torment my devotees, but tonight, your end has come.”
A fierce battle followed. Goddess Durga faced every attack of the lion and finally struck him down with her trident, breaking his arrogance. The lion collapsed, and the goddess gave him a curse:
“You will never harm anyone in this form again. Your soul shall find peace, and you will become a guardian, watching over these mountains.”
Since that day, no wild animal ever threatened the village again. The villagers began worshipping Goddess Parvati and held a grand fair each year on that day — calling it "Sher Vijay Diwas" (Victory Over the Lion Day).
