Whichever prompt you choose, you are required to compare and/or contrast Never Let Me Go as one of the texts. The dystopian texts you can choose from (for prompts 1-5) are “How to Get Back to the Forest,” “The Veldt,” and “There Will Come Soft Rains.” For prompt 6, you’ll compare Never Let Me Go to a Hawthorne short story. For prompt 7, you’ll compare it to Oedipus Rex.

2. Compare the role of nature in two dystopian texts.
3. Compare how two dystopian texts portray sexual and romantic relationships.
4. Compare the main characters in “How to Get Back to the Forest” and Never Let Me Go. What conflicts do they face, and how do they deal with them? What is their relationship to their peers? To authority figures and their school/camp? (You’re not required to address every one of those questions.)
5. Compare the roles of secrecy and suspense in Never Let Me Go and one other dystopian text. How does it function in each of these readings? What is its purpose? How does it relate to the themes of these texts?
6. Compare the development of a theme from the Hawthorne stories we read (“Young Goodman Brown” and “The Minister’s Black Veil”) to a similar theme in Never Let Me Go.
7. Analyze how Never Let Me Go corresponds to, and differs from, the conventions and themes of tragic drama by comparing it to Oedipus Rex.
