Option A: This option is based on Dr. Natalye Harpin Pass' lecture to us. Many thanks to her for sharing her expertise and time. In this last discussion, I would like to allow you to take the lead. I always make the discussions and I try to provide options I think you will want, but I realize being told what to write about even with options can sometimes limit creativity. So, please take this opportunity to use the lecture and the Jim Crow documentary to reflect on issues of race and racism in the United States. It is up to you how you do this. You can reflect on how religion impacted conversations about slavery, how limited freed people were after the Civil War and why, you can talk about how religion in African America communities helped African Americans (just harbors, sermons about liberty and equality...) I'd love if you wanted to bring the modern era into the conversation. Make this yours. I will sit back and learn. Don't forget to respond to one peer :)
Option B: In this option, you will learn about the syncretic religion known as the Native American Church. You will lear about the use of sacred substances, traditional beliefs and practices, and Christianity among some Native Americas to understand how the Church supports a strong sense of native American identity, spiritual growth, fosters a connection to traditional beliefs and practices, and provides a community space of healing, growth, and meaning. Please read the information on the Harvard Pluralism website on theNative American Church Links to an external site. and the Plains Humanities site Links to an external site., paying attention to how the religions reflects syncretism, supports Native American identity, and allows for the persistence of of tradition though adaptation. Discuss the development, beliefs, and practices of the NAC and the importance of the Church for supporting Native American identity, establishing a sense of meaning and comfort in the world, and supporting Native American culture in the modern U.S. Please respond to one peer as always.
