demonstrate your knowledge, understanding and application of relevant
process analysis and improvement concepts and techniques, as well as the proficiency with the use of the
simulation modeling software, within the broader context of informing operations and logistics management
decisions. As such, you are expected to undertake the following tasks.
1. Based on the information provided, formulate (conceptualise) the problem to be solved.
2. Map the production process at an appropriate level of detail so that it can be used as the basis for building
a simulation model, as well as to aid communication with team members and instructors.
3. Build the initial simulation model accurately representing the current (i.e. as-is) production process,
including logistics (e.g. handling and movement) aspects.
4. Run the simulation for a period of 4 weeks, assuming a five-day week, and generate appropriate results,
including as a minimum: resource utilisation levels; process throughput; and delay times.
5. Use the understanding of the process dynamics developed through the modelling exercise and simulation
results, to investigate any process issues such as bottlenecks, underutilised/idling resources and delays.
6. Develop three distinct scenarios considering alternative production configurations and evaluate them
using simulation results. This may include modifying the initial simulation model to incorporate any
changes and/or improvements and re-running it to generate a new set of results.
Useful Tips:
Build the model step by step so you could see the effects of changes made on the process output.
First, experiment with the Flexsim functions and commands to account for the information provided in the
problem as accurately and effectively as possible.
Make sure to use your simulation model to explore the feasibility of multiple scenarios such as alternative
scheduling sequences, batch sizes and machine utilisation levels.
You may make reasonable assumptions and informed judgement as needed, but make sure to state them
clearly in your report, along with a brief explanation on why they were required – do not to use assumptions
merely to by-pass the challenges faced, without first exploring alternative solution approaches.
Seek clarifications from the tutor on any doubts or missing information during computer lab classes.
Ensure you refer to the marking criteria (provided separately) well ahead of finalising the model/report.
