ESP32 Touch NMEA2000 Display

I am building a compact touch-screen instrument driven by an ESP32 that sits on a NMEA2000 backbone and shows ONLY the data I care about—environmental readings and tank levels. I already have a shortlist of hardware (ESP32 module, 4–5" capacitive display, NMEA2000 transceiver, power filter) and will forward exact part numbers the moment we start.

Your job is to write the firmware and create a flexible GUI that I can tweak later without touching the low-level code. I need more than a basic skin swap: the layout, colour themes, page order and even which variables appear on each page must be changeable through a simple JSON, TXT or lightweight UI editor you propose. Real-time data updates must be buttery smooth, and the screen should raise clear visual and audible alarms whenever a user-defined threshold is crossed.

Because this will live on a busy helm, touch interactions have to be glove-friendly, fonts readable at a glance, and refresh rates stable even when multiple PGNs flow in. You may pull any open-source libraries you like, but the final package has to compile in PlatformIO or Arduino IDE and be mine to modify.

Deliverables:
• Documented source code for the ESP32, ready to flash
• GUI assets + the “easy edit” method you implement (templates, config file, or mini editor)
• Short build guide that covers wiring, library installs, and NMEA2000 PGN mapping
• A demo video or screenshots proving real-time updates and alarm triggers on actual or simulated traffic

If absolutely necessary, I’ll provide a NMEA2000 data simulator or sensors if needed so you can verify environmental and tank level PGNs without a boat in your driveway. Let me know any questions, especially if you have preferred graphics or logging libraries; I’m keen to move quickly once the architecture is clear.

This is for a one off for my personal use. However an NDA is assumed.
