Change a downloaded Arduino sketch to suit my project

I have a working Arduino sketch written by an expert coder that controls 48 stepper motors using SPI with a custom made board with 48 shift registers. The code moves the steppers to different positions.
I don't understand the code sufficiently to do what I want so I need someone to modify the code to suit me.
