Advanced Robotics with Arduino & Raspberry Pi
Budget: $30 – $250 USD
For this project, I'm looking for someone with advanced expertise in Raspberry Pi and Arduino with a focus on robotics to help me create my automated chess board. Your main goal will be to create a circuit diagram, and write the program code for both the arduino and raspberry pi which would link stepper motors and sensors together, I need some guidance. Some parts of the project are ready, most of the logical aspects need to be modified. More description on the project down below:
Automated chess board project
Equipment being used:
2 nema 17 stepper motors
Raspberry pi
Power supply around 12 volts
Arduino, arduino cnc shield with stepper motor drivers A4988
64 hall effect sensors
3d printed parts and sliding mechanism for movement of pieces
Magnetic chess pieces, and chess board
Electromagnetic coil to carry the pieces: picture of piece movement mechanism provided
Functions of Board:
First step must have options so the user can play chess against the computer, and to select the difficulty level. The arduino would control the stepper motors with the cnc shield, send the signals received from the hall effect sensors to the raspberry pi to give the users move, then the raspberry pi would analyze what the user moved, and send back the move to an arduino which would then move the stepper motors according to the move made by the raspberry pi. There needs to be promotion logic, and piece capturing logic implemented in the game.
Second step, allow the user to connect the board to a program named lichess or chesscom online. The user would make a board on the move, press a button, this would send a signal to lichess or chess com which would make the move online for them. After their opponent online has played the move, the stepper motors would perform the same move on the smart chess board the user has. So in total, the user would be able to play with this board online.
Last, for the future we want to create more boards and update the board, so more functionality like displays clocks and voice should be added. This will be additional so does not go into this part of the build specifically.
Estimated time of completion
Finish the xy stepper motor grid by wednesday or thursday, start setting all of the sensors up friday and all of the wiring. Write the code on Friday or Saturday. Give directions on how to proceed. In total the project should be completed in around 8-10 days maximum since it is on a deadline.
