Freelance Illustrator Needed for Children’s Book Series: The Time-Traveling Compass

Job ID: 38758054

Budget: $250 – $750 USD

I am seeking a talented and imaginative illustrator for a middle-grade book series titled The Time-Traveling Compass, featuring two young protagonists, Max and Léo, as they embark on historical adventures. This project will involve creating illustrations that bring the characters, historical settings, and magical elements of the series to life in a way that’s engaging and educational for children ages 8-12.

Project Overview:

- Book Title: The Time-Traveling Compass (first in a planned series)
- Target Audience: Middle grade (8-12 years old)
- Tone and Style: Fantasy realism with an educational element, combining historical accuracy with vibrant, imaginative visuals.
- Illustration Style: Detailed and cinematic, with a magical, adventurous feel. Think of a blend between realistic fantasy and digital concept art, similar to animated films or high-quality children's book illustrations. While not comic-style, the images should be engaging and suitable for young readers.

Key Illustration Requirements:

- Character Illustrations: Two main characters, Max (age 12) and Léo (age 6), who will feature prominently in each book. Additional characters, including historical figures and individuals from different time periods.
- Setting and Scene Illustrations:
- Historical settings such as ancient Egypt, medieval Europe, and WWII France, all with accurate details relevant to each time period. Magical and mysterious elements, such as glowing portals and a time-traveling compass with intricate details.
- Captivating scenes that illustrate key moments in the story, such as the protagonists entering a time portal or exploring ancient landmarks.
- Illustrations should showcase Max and Léo in various dynamic poses and expressions to add depth to their characters.

Educational and Interactive Elements:

- Maps and diagrams relevant to each historical period.
- Illustrations are used for challenges, puzzles, and quizzes integrated into the book.

Consistent Style Across the Series:

- Illustrations need to maintain a consistent style throughout the series to support continuity and branding.
- Each book will have approximately 50 illustrations.

Ideal Candidate:
- Has experience in children’s book illustration, especially for the middle-grade age group.
- Skilled in creating fantasy or historical illustrations with a realistic touch.
- Able to capture complex scenes and characters with engaging visual storytelling.
- Has a portfolio that demonstrates versatility and the ability to illustrate magical or time-travel themes.
- Strong communication skills to work collaboratively and incorporate feedback.

Project Timeline and Budget:
- Timeline: We aim to begin the project within the next two months (as soon as the author finishes the first book) and expect completion of the illustrations within 3 - 4 months. We are ready to start trial illustrations within the next few weeks to evaluate the best candidate for this project.
- Budget: We are looking for competitive pricing, as we are planning to publish multiple books and would like to establish a long-term collaboration with the right illustrator. Please provide your rate per illustration or a project-based quote. We are open to negotiating based on experience and quality of work.

How to Apply:
If you are interested, please submit:
- A brief proposal outlining your approach to this project and why you’re a good fit.
- Examples of similar work, particularly any projects involving children’s book illustrations, historical settings, or fantasy themes.
- Your proposed timeline and pricing structure.

Thank you for your interest! We look forward to finding an illustrator who can bring The Time-Traveling series to life and create an unforgettable visual experience for our young readers.
